Am I my brother’s keeper – Part 3

a waterfall that looks like a human skull in it

TEXT CRITICAL NOTES

Our first text critical note comes from Genesis 4:1. Is has to do with the use of the name Yahweh “Since Exo_6:3 seems to indicate that the name Yahweh (יְהוָה, translated LORD) was first revealed to Moses (see also Exo_3:14), it is odd to see it used in quotations in Genesis by people who lived long before Moses. This problem has been resolved in various ways: (1) Source critics  propose that Exo_6:3 is part of the “P” (or priestly) Continue reading “Am I my brother’s keeper – Part 3”

Literary Context

The beginning of our text is Genesis 4:1 takes place after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden.  Adam and Eve “knew” each other and had procreated. Have both Cain and Abel. Prior to this time procreation was mentioned (Gen 1:28) but the fruit from this command had not yet come to be.  Jamieson explains “Eve said, I have gotten a man from the Lord— Continue reading “Am I my brother’s keeper – Part 2”

THE INTERPRETATION: THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES

The key to understanding and interpreting this vision is Eze 37:11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel; behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope has perished. We are completely cut off” (NASB). Those that were cut off were “dead, nearly dead, or in some condition understood to be socially or ritually analogous to death” (Olyan, 45).  The nation of Israel had given up all hope of Continue reading “A Rebirth Through The Valley of Dry Bones – Part 5”

TEXT CRITICAL NOTES

In verse one the word “ah” is used with the word “habbiq ah” refers to a specific valley “although the valley is not specifically stated it is generally assumed that it is the valley where Ezekiel first saw the visions of God” (Gaebelien, 926). However, there seems to be a varying opinion of the word that is “user” in this situation Strong uses the word “bikaw” which means “properly a split, that is a wide level valley between mountains: Continue reading “A Rebirth Through The Valley of Dry Bones – Part 4”

PRESENTATION of the TEXT

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE

Eze 37:1-14  The hand of the LORD was upon me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones.  (2)  He caused me to pass among them round about, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley; and lo, they were very dry.  (3)  He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord GOD, You know.”  (4)  Again He said to me, “Prophesy over these bones and say to them, ‘O dry bones, Continue reading “A Rebirth Through The Valley of Dry Bones – Part 3”

LITERARY CONTEXT

The beginning of the passage starts with Eze 37:1 which states that the hand of the lord was upon Ezekiel which is the indication that the vision was about to begin. Previous to our scripture God explains to Ezekiel what has happened and why the nation of Israel had been punished. God explained his wrath against the nation using this illustration Eze 36:17  “Son of man, when the house of Israel was living in their own land, they Continue reading “A Rebirth Through The Valley of Dry Bones – Part 2”

The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 6

a painting of a mourning dove with Chicks

APPLICATION

In the beginning of this passage, we see the genuine concern that all the believers in the early church had for one another. Today, it appears that many people in our society could care less about the person next door to them let alone down the street or in the community at large. The early church is the model in which we derive our church from today, but it appears in some cases that we forgot the lessons that are founders based everything they did on, that is caring for the physical as well as the Continue reading “The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 6”
