LITERARY CONTEXT

The beginning of the passage starts with Eze 37:1 which states that the hand of the lord was upon Ezekiel which is the indication that the vision was about to begin. Previous to our scripture God explains to Ezekiel what has happened and why the nation of Israel had been punished. God explained his wrath against the nation using this illustration Eze 36:17  “Son of man, when the house of Israel was living in their own land, they Continue reading “A Rebirth Through The Valley of Dry Bones – Part 2”

APPLICATION

In the beginning of this passage, we see the genuine concern that all the believers in the early church had for one another. Today, it appears that many people in our society could care less about the person next door to them let alone down the street or in the community at large. The early church is the model in which we derive our church from today, but it appears in some cases that we forgot the lessons that are founders based everything they did on, that is caring for the physical as well as the Continue reading “The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 6”

The deception of Ananias and Sapphira

In contrast to the example of Barnabas were Ananias and Sapphira. This married couple evidentially had participated in the Christian community enjoying the benefits of being in fellowship with their fellow Christians. When the time came and the need arose for them to sell their property, they withheld a portion of the sale and lied about what they had received from the sale of the property. Ananias and Sapphira were not required to give any of the sales to the church; however, they did with a lie. Ananias and Sapphira were, in effect, trying to rob God. When Ananias had thrown the money at Peter’s feet, Peter proclaimed that “Satan had filled their hearts (5:3)” (NASB). Continue reading “The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 5”

 The Generosity of the Believers

The opening verse of the passage states that “everything was held in common (32)”NASB. This was not a political philosophy but rather the believer’s commitment to one another. Luke professes that no one in the community kept ownership of their property but had given it freely for the common good. The apostles “advocated voluntary sharing of possessions, not the abolition of ownership” (Kistemaker, 173). The Apostles encouraged but did not demand, the sharing of property. The notion that Continue reading “The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 4”

PRESENTATION OF TEXT

Scripture Passage

Act 4:31b-5:12 they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness and the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them.  (33)  And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.  (34)  For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales  (35)  and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each as any had need.  (36)  Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian Continue reading “The Beginning of the Christian Church – Part 3”
