John 13:36-14:7 Jesus the only way to the Father – Part 5

pikes peak summitThomas and Jesus Dialogue

The last multiple variable in the scripture is in verse 7. The sentence reads like this: “If you have (known or knew) me you (would, should, or will) (know or knew) my father.” This issue is based around the interpretation of the tense of the word combinations used. While this seems to be a little issue at the surface, it has some serious implications. Jesus is saying that He had revealed the Father to Thomas properly, within himself. This passage states that the apostles did not truly know who he was. If the apostles knew who he truly was they would have realized that they knew the Father as well (Kruse, 294). The next issue that needs to be looked at is verse 14:1, “Believe in God”. There are two uses of the word “Believe” (pisteuete). “Believe” (pisteuete) Continue reading “John 13:36-14:7 Jesus the only way to the Father – Part 3”

Literary Context

The Gospel of John is a narrative that picks out bits and pieces of Jesus’ ministry (Tenney 12). The order is not the same as in the synoptic Gospels. There are a few different theories on the outline of the Gospel of John. One is Chapters 2-11 point to the death and resurrection of Jesus, 12-20 Continue reading “John 13:36-14:7 Jesus the only way to the Father – Part 2”
