Historical and Social Setting

            The book of Proverbs has some problems with its authorship. At one time it was assumed that the entire book was written by Solomon, son of King David they also believed that “Agur and Lemuel were pseudonyms of Solomon” (Gaebelein, 886). Later commentators have remarked that the text should be looked at again and “that Lemuel and Aguar are probably not pseudonyms for Solomon and that a second set of proverbs begin at Proverbs 22:17” (Gaebelein, 886).
