Historical and Social Setting

The book of Proverbs has some problems with its authorship. At one time it was assumed that the entire book was written by Solomon, son of King David they also believed that “Agur and Lemuel were pseudonyms of Solomon” (Gaebelein, 886). Later commentators have remarked that the text should be looked at again and “that Lemuel and Aguar are probably not pseudonyms for Solomon and that a second set of proverbs begin at Proverbs 22:17” (Gaebelein, 886). With this

The Response to Wisdom

Within the scripture focus there is to responses to wisdom one is the way of the scoffer and the second is the way of the Wise. The responses have conditional rewards
The scoffer is one way that individuals respond to wisdom and correction. This individual will refute, put down, verbally as well as physically abuse (in some cases) the person who tries to correct them. Even today there are scoffers in the world. We work with them there are in our congregations,

Folly’s Banquet

There is several issues to contend with when Folly’s banquet is studied. The first issue is the difficulties that Proverbs 9:13 poses for interpreters (folly’s Invitation). The second issue is the omitted additional text from the Septuagint. The final issue is the difference in understanding between the Jewish and Christian understanding of death and Sheol (folly’s consequence).

Verse 18 also has one term in it that gives Christian’s trouble, that term is Sheol. Sheol is commonly translated as hell, hades, or gehenna. In the Christian tradition “it is usually associated with eternal punishment, particularly by fire” (Achtemeier, 413). In the Christian tradition Sheol is not normally associated with the righteous only the unrighteous. Because of the fact that Sheol or is equivalent hell

CONCLUSION

SUMMATION

Proverbs 9 is an allusion between Wisdom and Folly. Wisdom is representative of the “voice of the Lord” (Murphy, 138). We might even go as far as to say it is God’s word, his voice, and his righteousness. Thru wisdom men are able to live a full and productive life. In listening to wisdom men will not be tempted and fall for the moral traps that are laid before them. Once an individual
